TSS 482 Visa: Temporary Skills Shortage Visa

The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) is a work visa that is sponsored by an employer who is operating a business in Australia.

What is the TSS 482 visa?

People can refer to this visa by different names such as TSS visa or 482 visa but they are the same visa. The visa can be granted for up to four years, depending on your occupation and country of nationality/permanent residence.

There are three streams for the subclass 482 visa:

  • Short Term: where your occupation is on the Short-Term Skill Shortage list. This visa is granted for up to 2 years, with the ability to extend for a further 2 years onshore (exception: where international trade obligations apply).
  • Medium Long-Term: where your occupation is on the Medium Long-Term Skill Shortage list. This visa is granted for up to 4 years, with the ability to extend for a further 4 years onshore. This stream has a pathway to permanent residence after 3 years of working for the same employer in the same position on the subclass 482 visa.
  • Labour agreement: where your employer has negotiated with the Department of Home Affairs and an agreement has been made to allow them to sponsor occupations which are not on either skill shortage list. The length of this visa, requirements for the visa, and option to proceed to permanent residency will depend on the terms of the agreement.

What are the requirements for the TSS 482 visa?

The requirements for a successful subclass 482 visa application include:

  • Be nominated for a role by a suitable employer, and your employer has not withdrawn the nomination
  • An occupation on the applicable Skill Shortage list
  • English language test completed within the past 3 years (unless you have a passport from New Zealand, the UK, Canada, the USA or the Republic of Ireland)
  • Be of good character and character checks from any country in which you have resided in for 12 months or more (cumulatively) in the past 12 years
  • Pass any required health checks
  • Have the qualifications and/or experience for the nominated occupation specified in the Australia New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) (including positive Skills Assessment for some occupations)
  • In all cases, have at least 2 years of relevant work experience for the role nominated at time of decision on the application
  • For applicants in the Short-Term stream: be a genuine temporary entrant

How do I apply for a Temporary Skills Shortage Visa subclass 482?

To apply for a TSS visa (subclass 482), you need:

  • A suitable employer who is willing to nominate you for the role
  • An occupation on the applicable skilled occupation list
  • English language test completed within the past 3 years (unless you have a passport from New Zealand, the UK, Canada, the USA or the Republic of Ireland)
  • Character checks from any country in which you have resided in for 12 months or more (cumulatively) in the past 12 years
