Permanent residency pathway changes now in effect

27 November 2023

The Australian government has recently announced changes to the subclass 186 visa Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream which were planned to come into effect on 25 November 2023.

Over the weekend these changes were implemented, providing a new pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers holding 482 visas. The new changes will allow those who have worked for their employer on a 482 visa for at least 2 out of the last 3 years to be sponsored for a subclass 186 visa.

The amendments also no longer impose the requirement for the visa applicants to be working in an occupation listed on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) to be eligible for this pathway. This change opens up opportunities for a wider range of skilled workers to secure permanent residency in Australia.

This is a significant development for those who have been working in Australia on a 482 visa and are looking to secure their permanent future in Australia. It will also provide employers with the opportunity to retain valuable employees who have proven their skills and commitment during their time on a 482 visa.
