The Australian Government has recently announced a new program which will enable individuals, businesses and members of the community to propose individuals to be granted permanent visas to Australia as refugees.

This programme will form part of Australia’s Humanitarian Program which provides permanent visas to 16,250 each year. The CSP is the successor of the Community Proposal Pilot (CPP) that has been operating over the past 3 years.

This new initiative is the Community Support Programme (CSP) and will include 1000 places. Although the visa commenced on 1 July 2017, the Department must first approve the community organisations or ‘APOs’ first before any individuals can be proposed or apply for the visa. This process is still taking place.

The Department is likely to announce which organisations will be registered as Approved Proposing Organisations (APOs) in October 2017.

Further information regarding the registration of APOs should be available on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s website in around October 2017.

How does this affect me?

If you have family members or know of individuals or families who are living outside Australia and are at risk of experiencing harm in their country of residence you may be able to propose, through an APO, that they be able to apply for refugee status in Australia. This will be available after October 2016.
